except the e60... Can't afford to buy it... it will trigger a war at home!! . I must tell you after driving all previous generations of M5.. none gives me as much satisfaction and feedback as the 3,8 Euro M5.. . It has more personality and feels more real than the e28 or e39.
Every car in its own time. Wait for the F10 M5 to come out, then you'll be able to find a nice clean E60 for the right amount.

In the meantime, enjoy the E39...

I agree. M5, unless you prize comfort over performance. The ride of a 545 is significantly more comfortable, but the M5 handling and responsiveness is a cut above.

Good luck,
DRP

Weren't there a few e39 M5 owners who switched to an e60 and overall thought it was a better car?

I'd have to agree and probably go with the M5. However, if you were buying new, then I'd take a 545/550.

Here's one positive review of an e39 owner moving to an e60 http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74927

Nevermind the fact that he sold the e60 and kept the M5 though.

Good point, the '03 M5 was totally worked out and should be more reliable. Only issue would be the risk that you find an M5 that was thrashed within an inch of its life.

If you like LeMans blue, I saw this one that seems pretty nice.

For $45K, I would take this any day over a 2004 545i.
Indeed. I contacted that seller... .

I am more and more leaning towards the M5... . Now what if the 545i was also made to look like an M5 with OEM front fascia? (no badge upgrade.. still a 545i). with 31k miles... for the same price as a 2003 M5?

Actually after reading beewang's email.. I am ahem.. hesitant again!! Better sound, better handling... those are two attributes that are HARD to ignore.. especially given that this car will be a daily driver through Wash DC traffic to/fro work.. aargh!!

To be honest, if you really mean to use it as a daily driver in traffic - why go for a manual??? You have your E34 to have fun on the road...

Just my 2c.

Actually. I do not mind at all the manual tranny. It became second nature as that's all I have been driving for most of my life! the e34 I am babying and keeping low miles on it <50k as a collectable (1 of < 200 made, 1 of 3 in Avus Blue/Black)

I have driven more miles on a manual too, but since I started commuting into London (and in general as traffic in the South East of England keeps growing), I bless my auto box every time I am in a queue - that is, very often. The opportunities for me to actually enjoy a manual are probably less than once per week, if I want to keep my life and my license.

If you are driving in heavy traffic though, regardless of manual or auto, I'd reverse my previous advice and go for the 545. The M5 is too highly tuned to be fun in traffic for any length of time.
