If you replace the old battery with the exact same type and spec - the battery needs to be registered.
If you switch to an AGM battery or one with different specs - the car needs to be programmed with the new settings.

Lots of posts on this topic - do a search and decide for yourself if you are doing the right thing.

Bought the Die Hard version of the AGM battery for $157 from Sears. It comes with a 5 year full replacement warranty. According to my Indy, the battery needs to be registered because the computer tells the alternator to charge the battery at different AMPs when new vs. old. So, if you don't register a brand new battery, you might need to replace one prematurely say in 3 years vs. 5 years. I didn't spend the extra $80 for the programming because I figure if mine dies in the next 5 years, I'd get a brand new one from Sears, no questions asked!

Sears will give you ONE free replacement and the warranty on it will only be the remainder of the 5 years from the date you purchased the first battery.

Interesting approach though.

I'll be replacing my battery early next year. I plan on doing it myself. I'm not even going to bother calling my dealer for a quote.

Hi pjinca,

Who do you recommend for battery replacement/programming in Socal other than the dealer/stealer?

Thanks,
