my dealership charge $465 out of the door. when I went to change it my advisor told me to go to any indy shop and replace it. I got Interstate battery with 5 year warranty for $180 with programming. car runs great.

Battery costs less than $200 typically, the "programming" of the battery can be done by any indy shop - usually for free, at least here in SoCal they do it as a courtesy.

If you're handy, have a decent set of tools, and good back (these batteries are HEAVY) you could pull the old and replace with a new one in less than 30 minutes. Be very careful with the cables - our cars use complex cables that are very different than your Father's Oldsmobile. Then a well-equipped indy could code the car to match your new battery.

My Ride: 2008 535i LCI with sports/premium package, Sports trans with paddle shifters, CF emblems, JB4 Software, Dinan Exhaust, Navigation, M5Tech body kit, Carbon wrap interrior trim and CIC Controller.
My recent quote for the 08 535 was 654.00 and then they told me the battery was high, it cost 229.00! WTF? the rest is all install and programming. I was told on this forum about Autozone and the exact fitment size, AH and CC/CCA fro around 190.00. I will be taking this battery in the next few days. Programming cound be done by a local indy I'm sure for under 75.00

^^^I wouldn't recommend physically installing the battery by yourself. It's better if you have a helper holding the battery cables out of the way while you put the battery in place.
The battery weighs 65lbs - so it will be a good workout for anyone who doesn't lift weights much.

I figured they were trying to get me... Then to top it off, they tried to charge me a deductible for warrentee work, on an recall!!!! (HPFP). Told the SA to get the GM and the service manager in here now to discuss that, or I would knock on their door and ask them my damn self.... Total cost at the end of the day.... $0.
