**cough** RS6 = twin turbo V8 = 450HP? Vs.? 545 = NA V8 = 325HP **cough**

he either had some aditional lead taking up weight, or he must have NOT been on it allll the way, because the RS6 will move! these two cars are NO comparison whatsoever.

545 Vs. (B6/B7) S4 would be more like it, since the new V8 puts out about 340HP

Let's do some elementary calculations, and make a few favorable assumptions.

Curb weight RS6 4060 lbs, with 4 big guys, 4860 lbs. Curb weight of my car (1/4 tank, lightweight wheels and tires), 3700lbs + me = 3860 lbs.

Now take drivetrain losses in an automatic of 20%, manual 15%. This gives Audi RS6 360 whp, BMW 545 276 whp. Calculate the lbs per hp for both cars.

Audi RS6 - 4860 / 360 = 13.5 lbs hp

BMW 545 - 3860 lbs / 275 = 14.0 lbs / hp

Close enough isn't it? Especially if he didn't get a kickdown from the slushbox.

You ought to get that cough checked out.

Sounds like fun.? Hitting redline in 4th comes as a bit of a surprise, huh?

Is the RS6 a manual?? Perhaps he didn't downshift.

no, they were only sold as automatics in the US. unfortunatelly. and MTMs software broke a few of the auto trannies.

Those turbo's take a while to spin up...?

they sure do, from a standstill,
but when in motion already ... unless you are running in the low 1K RPMS, or out top of the spool range, you will move - QUICK!
if you have ever driven one, you'd understand. but the new RS4 will most likely beat it with its V8 FSI 4.2l & 420HP, as well as its new all wheel drive system that is 60R/40F

the DT loss on the quattor system is actually more like 30-35%, so it'd be even closer than you estimated.

damn cough .... I should go & see a doctor about it. ;-)

Doesn't weight play less of an issue when you're already at speed.

Because a RS6 can pull away from an e39 M5 let alone a 545i

Maybe it was just a S6, and not a RS6? ie no turbo.

The boys on the Bimmerfest board say otherwise.

'yup, the e39 m5 is faster than the rs6 from 0-130, and in highway rolls. the audi will have it off the line, but the bimmer will slowly pass it above 100.

Definitely an RS6 - I've driven one. A friend of mine got the first one in Cincinnati, and at first, I thought it was him.

Also, weight is less of a factor at speed. I don't know what the RS6 drag is compared to the 545. Also, he was in front, so I may have benefitted slightly from a draft.

For some reason, I just happen to have the May '03 issue of car and driver handy....

0-60 / 0-100 / 0-150 / 1/4 mile

RS6: 4.4 / 10.7 / 30.9 / 12.8 @ 108
M5: 4.9 / 11.5 / 29.2 / 13.4 @ 108

So yeah, I guess the M5 would take the RS6 over 100

well.... I don't think your wheels cut 100+ pounds off your car... the weight of the 545i listed at 3,814 pounds....

either way, he did have a lot more weight in the car..... you can roughly estimate 1 car legnth per person.....

I think the real issue that isn't being mentioned is that the RS6 is AWD, and while that is great for getting a jump off the line, it really kills the car when at speed... the AWD causes much larger drivetrain losses.... you'll always see better 1/4 mile times, and lower trap speeds with AWD cars....

Wolverine,

Sorry about that F1 experience. I watched the whole thing on TV and it was awful. I can't believe it ended like this. A really bad move for F1 in the US.
On the positive side. I am a huge fan of Schumi, and that way he got 10 points in the championship that otherwise he probably would not have gotten.
