Coil pack is the long tube that plugs on to the spark plug. It contains an electrical coil to take the 12V and produces the ten's of thousands of volts to the spark plug. Here is one for the M54: BMW E60 530i M54 3.0L Engine Electrical - 12131712219 - Ignition Coil - Priced Each - ES#10831

the "issue" is not frequent, so the car memory stores it anyway or after an "x" number of starts erases the eventual error?

I was getting an unstable idle at start up ..After changing my valve covers it stopped doing it. Thats not the reason I changed them , was because they were leaking . But since I installed the new ones , the crazy idle at start up is gone .
