If someone has both a pre-LCI and an LCI car then they could swap the amp and see if it changes the sound. I dont have the LCI WDS to check if the wiring is the same but the ETK shows that the parts are definately different.
In fact on the pre-LCI cars there have been 3 changes to this part, one until 09/05, then until 03/06 and the last until 03/07.
So it would be good to identify what pre-LCI build are you comparing the LCI sound quality to. It could be the newer pre-LCIs are almost as bad the the LCI and so some people cannot tell the difference but earlier pre-LCI are quite a lot different that the LCI so people like Rudy can.

Maybe they DID downgraded the L7. With the launch of the LCI they started offering the BMW Individual High-End Soundsystem above the L7...

The pre-LCI L7 was great. The LCI was close but somewhat disappointing in comparison. One does not expect audio systems on a refresh to be less than the predecessor, but it was less. All of these BMW enthusiasts complaining about the L7 on the LCI are not making this stuff up. Somebody at BMW blew it. Somebody else at BMW is blowing it now by not fixing a known problem.

I recently sat in a friends '08 550 with L7 and had to change his settings to get the sound right. However, I must say that his system did not sound similar to mine. My L7 (pre-LCI) system sounds much better. This sucks to know. Maybe they'll correct this for the 2009's, which is when I'll be going to my next E60.

Also, one small note is that on the old car, when you selected one of the L7 modes, you instantly heard the change. Now, when you select a mode, the sound is interrupted for a second or two before the DSP processor kicks in.
