Hi guys,
Here is the story:
2004 E60 SMG transmission 100 000 miles/ 165 000km
Last week after starting the car i get the message that i can only use R, N, 1-3 gears.
Turn off the car and back on and the message is gone. No problem driving the car.
Drove the car for a couple more days, no problem. One day going downhill i shifted from 4 to 5 and the tranny just jumped to N for one second and right after that it did like a hard shifting twice up to 6th.
At the stop light the it jumped to N. I put the car in 1st gear and the engine stopped.
Turned on the car put it back in 1st push the gas and the car goes backwards.
I managed to get the car on the side of the road in the 1st gear......going backwards
After a few on and off the engine i put it in R and back to 1 and it went ok. I got the car home.
The next couple of days i drove the car around for not more than 10 min and nothing happened.
4 days later on my way to the mechanic the tranny decided to die so it jumped to N and i had to tow it. No lights on or anything like that.
Yesterday my mechanic told me that when the engine is cold he could drive the car for about 10-15 min before the tranny starts acting crazy. Also he got the ABS, Steering wheel active, and one more light (cant remember) on. All these lights showed up right before the tranny jumps to N and does that 1st gear goes backwards thing.
He figures that 2 tranny sensors are gone, the position sensor (or something like that) and i cant remember the other one. (both located on top of the transmission)
Now....these two sensors apparently can be ordered only in Germany and takes them 2-3 weeks to receive them.
What else could be ?! Why do i get the other lights on?
I changed the battery with an aftermarket one 1 year ago. Could that be the cause ?
Now the car is in the shop for 2 days and they still dont know for sure what the problem is. Why the weird tranny problem and why so many lights on?
These guys are pretty good here in Vancouver, Canada. (its not a BMW dealer)
