Default HELP!...Check Engine Light is on.

I was driving on the highway and the check engine light showed up. I checked gas cap and topped up coolant. Anything else needs to be done? I booked an appointment with BMW, but they can't get me in for another 2 weeks due to some recall work they're doing

Car is a 2007 525i with about 48,xxx KMs on it. Always filled up with 91+ octane. I was thinking maybe a o2 sensor gone bad? What else causes the check engine light to come on?

Cheers!

Can you go to auto parts store and use the ODB scanner?

Bad idea to just start doing things, you need to get the codes read first. There are several things that could cause a check engine light. They should have auto zone in Canada, here in the US auto zone read codes for free. Their codes will not be BMW specific but it will at least let you know if the car is drivable until you can get it fixed.

The check engine light is off. I guess after I topped up the coolant I should have taken the car for a drive instead of starting it up and turning it off.

Thanks for the information guys! We don't have Auto Zone in Canada but we have similar stores like Lordco.

Same happened to me, it's going to come up again, will be on and off.. i believe it was the o2 sensor they had to replace.
