Ahhh Lurking Audiophiles here I see. Add me to the list. Home System: Meridian Reference 800DVD + 861 Proc. Theta Dreadnaught II, Bohlender Graebener Planars. I just bought a 2005 545iA this month with the Premium sound (Logic 7)
The premium sound system seems to sound much better than the standard system. I found the system stages pretty well and high freq. reproduction is acceptable. The bass is a bit boomy for my taste but after a little tweaking I am not terribly disappointed with the system overall.
My 2cents... Sodapop Irvine,CA
I can't wait til my eBay purchased red reflectors arrive this week. Woohoo! so much excitement for $24

I have found that the processing on the Logic 7 is not extremely good, however.... it is required to generate anything close to an accurate soundstage.
With processing turned off, there is extreme bias to the side of the car where you are sitting. Bias for my 545 with Logic 7, processing off is behind the drivers seat. (that's where the sound comes from loudest)
I have messed around with the fader and balance to attempt to correct this.... but it doesn't sound good.
So, I use the Logic 7 Concert Hall setting. This dramatically improves the soundstage, moving it forward and higher. Sound begins to emanate from the hood area of the car, rather than from behind the driver.
I find that frontal imaging is stronger with the Theater setting (due to increased bias towards the center channel speaker), but I find music sounds better on Concert. So that's where I leave it.
I have adjusted the EQ as well. I have a slight increase to the bass and highs, with a dip in the midrange. I found this allows me to increase the volume a little more than if I leave the mids flat.
(Remember that the type of music and quality of recording will affect your settings.)
Bottom line. If you are an audiophile, you will never find a worthy OEM soundsystem from any car company. The Logic 7, however, is at the high-end of the spectrum for OEM audio.
Personally, I have always installed huge Sound Q systems in my old cars. So I'm used to serious quality. But when I got my 545, I decided I wanted a drivers car.... and BMW fit the criteria. But I am not planning to disassemble a nearly $70,000 car to install a system. The way I see it, there are enough potential problems which can occur with the iDrive..... it's too risky to add the current load of amplifiers, regardless of the power supply modifications I were to make (deep cycle battery, capacitors, upgraded alternator). Plus, knowing BMW.... they would probably void the Full Maintenance warranty if I tried.
So... the Logic 7 will have to do.
But..... to answer the original question. If you like music, and care about sound quality... then get the Logic 7. It is a noticable improvement over the standard audio.

I listened to both before purchasing-and did not find justifyable ($1800) difference-even after salesman tweeked the equilizer. If there were no difference is cost, I would say insignificant diffence.
I too listen to stereo two channel music at home.
My feeling is to have a local audio shop add base to trunk-there are a lot of threads on this- and swap out a couple of speakers and go from there-estimate is $800.

Sales people know very little about the E60 and much less about how to tweek the Logic 7 system.

I have a receiver with DSP so I was able to compare the L7 with another system

The last thing I want is all my bass booming from my trunk as I drive through my neighborhood. Also, any mods will give BMW one more thing to blame if something goes wrong with your car.

Hello,
Thanks for the nice review. I went ahead and order the Logic 7 for my 545i based on the (very helpful) replies I got here.
It's hard to understand (especially for the audiophiles on board here I think) how they manage to get voice to come out **behind** driver w/out dsp. Aren't the treble/mid drivers up front?
Anyway, I was mainly afraid of uncontrolled/gimmicky reverb, time delay, etc. It seems not to be the case here. There appears to be an issue of boomy bass for some of us, I hope I will be able to tone it down.
Thanks and regards,
Can

My Ride: no longer driving an E60.
I drive a E92 335i now
I also enjoy music in stereo, thats why I took the HIFI system instead of the Logic 7. I've tried L7 during a weekend in a 7series and was dissapointed when listened in the evenining on my home stereo system. Rega Ampli, CD, ... and Totem Accoustic (Mani-2) speakers. I believe the HIFI system gives good value.
My idea is if you play music recorded in stereo, you should do the playback in stereo too, otherwise the music gets 'electronic'. If you listen to music from real instruments and not from an electronic music noise making devise, go for stereo.
But don't misunderstand me. I enjoy DVD with live music, and this you have to play on a Dolby Digital or DTS system. If this feature would be supported on the Logic 7, then I would buy it and play my DVD's in the car. I also have a home cinema system and I only buy Music DVD's, that really rocks.
