I've read the manual and spent considerable time just playing with the system and still cant say that I understand how it works. Can some one dumb it down for me? Thanks

It's an unnecessarily complex setup  It forces you to look at the screen to fine tune the temp, taking the driver's attention away from the road.

Our ambient temps have swung from the mid-90's to the low 20's during the past 6 months. And except for a few times this Winter I used the defrost and deice buttons to clear front and rear windows I let the system do it's thing.
Should I want it cooler or warmer for me or passenger it's a simple adjustment of the dashboard dial. I think it's pretty simple once the IDrive settings are to your liking.

How do get heat to flow from the defroster vent and the floor vent at the same time?

I too agree that it is overly complicated. Note that the red/blue bars in iDrive do not affect the floor vents...if the bars are set to all blue (cold) then you can still get hot air on your feet by setting the temperature knob to hot (fully clockwise).

Once the ventilation preferences are set in IDrive I use the dial to set temps where I feel comfortable and set the system on "AUTO"!
That works for me also.
