Thanks ricracing,

Those of us in southern CA don't get to use our wipers much less windshield washers!!

So, if I understand the headlight washers will be automatically activated after the windshield washer is cycled 3 times?

Brilliant!!
...they won't come on unless the headlights are actually lighted.

Unless of course you do not have Xenons fitted. If this is the case you will not get the washer function as standard unless you pay for them additionally as an option.

Even when these washers are not fitted there are still the small covers under the lights it's just that they are dummies ie. nothing fitted below them. I guess this was a way for BMW to cut costs by making the bumpers all the same whether or not washer are fitted.

You can prize the cover open forward with your finger nail to expose the twin washer jets if you have them The dummy covers are fixed and do not hinge forward.

Please tell me that you use headlights in SoCal, and the sun doesn't shine 24-7 all year long.

Just found this elsewhere on the forum. This site is an amazing wealth of info that even the dealers cannot help you with.
For those who are curious...

The rule for when the headlight washers come on is as follows...

They are switched on during the first wash after starting the car AND lights are switched on (either auto or manual, including parking lights)

It is then off for the next 7 minutes (assuming the lights are still on) UNLESS you operate the windscreen washer 5 times within those 7 minutes

I've only ever seen my headlight washers work once. Now when the headlights are turned on to automatic or manual on mode (and lit) I've tried using the winshield washer 8 times in a row within 2 minutes... the headlight washers never sprayed. Is the headlight washer consistent for you guys?

Mine consistently operate in the exact manner described by kjhkent's post:

When my lights are on/lit, I get two blasts of washer fluid over the lights when I pull the wash/wipe stalk. If I pull the stalk again in the next 5 minutes or so, the headlamp washers do nothing. If I wait a little longer, I get another two blasts of fluid over the lights.

mine still doesn't work. Seems like after I took my car in for a AUX port install and the accompanying software update my headlight washers no longer work and my steering wheel adjustmewnt controls are not fully working. Could the Idrive update mess up both these things?
