Okay, just to clarify... In auto setting, the daytime running lights are on, if the dealer has programmed it as such. AND, the daytime running lights are less bright than the actual headlights. But if the daytime running light option is programmed off by the dealer, then in the auto setting, the lights are off and only come on when the ambient light conditions are dark enough to activate it. Is that right? Just wondering so I can go to the dealer and ask them to program it on or off. Thanks.

Since you mentioned this, I think I experienced the same. I remember the green light coming on at the light switch auto position only in the evenings before but since the mp3 retro, its green all the time now. I didn't think it had anything to do with this programming but this is the only re-programming done at the dealer recently.
thanks

Yeah but no one on any of the BMW forums calls them "pre Face lift." Even the new E9x's they are called Pre LCI and LCI ( before 09 and 09+)...
And in the FAQ section there is a bunch of info on the differences of LCi and Pre lci, just got to search.

Same here... with the headlight switch in auto, the green light illuminates and the headlights seem to stay on. I live in Seattle, and it's cloudy here ALL the time, so I just thought maybe the ambient light sensor was tripping the headlights to come on. But now I'm thinking they're datime running lights. Hmmm, does anyone have a definitive answer on this one?

I had the same issue.
I asked the dealer to replace the light sensor unit and it was fixed after that.
In fact, I had to deal with the resistant service manager a few times in KUNI BMW in Portland, OR.
Thanks.

I'm in the same boat...brought it in..they said they adjusted the RLS. It worked for about 5 minutes...enough for me to drive off the lot. ...I'll wait till I'm due for another service to bring it in..very annoying!
