When the car is on, the headlight knob is in the "auto" position and the headlights are off b/c it is sufficiently bright outside, should the knob's backlighting be on? Meaning, the icons for auto mode, parking lights, off, etc. are illuminated as if the lights were on. Is that normal?

I think the answer is yes. I seem to notice my background lighting is on whenever I pull into a dark space, like a garage, even though the lights are off.

Instrument back-lighting is automatic and whenever interior light levels are low enough will turn on. Works fine for me ... As for the headlight switch, the green light indicates when your headlights are actually illuminated. Additional information is available in your owner's manual.

I'm well aware that instrument back-lighting is automatic. what I'm saying is that if I am in a sunny area and my headlights are off, the headlight switch area is backlit as if the lights were on. Is that normal? Shouldn't that area only be backlit if the entire dash was "on?"

It's kinda dark under the instrument panel where that switch is - I've never noticed if it's on even on a bright day. I'll have to give it a look whenever it stops snowing and the sun decides to shine here in NJ

Dealer said that the light switch cluster is supposed to be on/backlit whenever the ignition is on.

Critical controls such as light switch, ignition switch, door lock, hazard light str supposed to be backlit at all time. This enables driver to locate those switches quickly. Imagine driving along a mountain road on a sunny day, forgetting to turn on the headlight as one enters the first tunnel...

I do not use Auto since I park in my home garage. I prefer to turn on my light as needed, rather than have them come on for a short time every time I leave or enter the garage.

I also turn the headlights on only when I need them but actually turn them to 'Auto" to get the benefits of the Adaptive features; just turning to "ON" doesn't turn on the Adaptive portion of the headlights.
