I don't have the Bi-xenons and as a result have the little wheel by the light switches to adjust my lights. My car was built in May '04.

Maybe the issue is that BMW trait of one option automatically including another option or feature. Perhaps the automatic headlight adjustment is linked to active steering - just a thought.

I noticed i did not have any way to adjust the height of the headlights when i had the boot and car fully loaded,all i did was get my son to switch the ignition on and off and stood in front of the car and watched the headlights to see if they moved when he did so.When he switched on the ignition the lights moved up and down about 3/4 of inch to get the right height.

Malc.....on my first E60 I had small wheel to adjust my lights as well,non xenons.

From what you've described. Its similar to what I was trying to explain to Iceman in this topic.

I had a E46 320iSE and 325iSE which had the normal halogen lights (non the xenons). Both had the small wheel for height adjustment for when the car was loaded. However everytime you started the car and switched on the headlights, the lights would move up and down as if they were adjusting automatically. I think this "feature" has been carried over to the E60. As I said it could be a startup procedure or something. I still think you should have the small wheel on your E60, unless of course BMW introduced something new recently which I doubt very much.

 

I can now adjust my headlights.BMW fitted the wrong switch when the car was on the production line,why this was not picked up by quality control when the car was finished and checked over i will never know.Makes you wonder what sort of quality control BMW have on their production lines if a simple thing like a wrong switch was missed,you can see why we have so many problems between us. <_<

 

are you (xenon-types) saying that the auto-levelling has no manual counterpart?

that is a bad thing for one reason, at least: when i drive on the continent i set the lights to the lowest (and do not require stickee headlight shields)

if they are auto-levelling are you not breaking the law if you don't stick the shields on for driving on the 'right' side of the road?

 

I read somewhere that you can still adjust the xenon light cluster within the engine compartment. Maybe that's the workaround but generally the xenons are autolevelling.

 

There is an adjustment within the engine compartment, but IMO, it should be used sparingly. That adjustment is independent of the neat auto leveling feature.
