Still not sure why they do that though
Probably some startup procedure for some unknown reason

A sensor is attached to the rear axle. This sensor informs the headlights about how much weight is loaded to the rear axle - and as a consequence, the headlights are adjusted accordingly in order to avoid insecure dazzling of on-coming traffic.

I believe this is mandatory with xenons as they normally are more powerful than regular halogen lamps.

And.. the auto-adjustment is working continuously while the lights are on. However, on the E46 I believe there is a 20 second lag, which is considerably reduced on the 5er.

Yeah, that's what I knew...
but what I didn't knew is, that the e60 is also doing this startup procedure without having xenons. I thought it's just when you have them. However... I have xenons

Maybe the moving / leveling lights on the non-xenons when first switched on are to check that the mechanism is working?? Just a guess.

You mean the ride height/weight adjustment (dip adjustment) [common on Europe cars?]
I most definitely do mean this. The car dose not have xenons they are normal headlights. On my first E60 I had an adjustment wheel next to the dimmer for the dashboard lights but on this one nothing.

There is a wheel similar in the light control group to the left of the steering wheel that dims the dash display. That whole group is hard for me to see from the driving position and the knobs are not designed that well for touch control. Once you locate certain functions by touch, it gets easier.

As i said in my last post i do not have a wheel next to the dimmer for the dash lights.Have just been out to the car and discovered that it has automatic headlight adjustment, I thought that you only got this when you have xenons ?

530dse,

So did I. I thought it was only on xenons too.
How and where did you find out that the car had automatic headlight adjustment?
