I've had two updates -- although technically I never specifically asked them to do any updates -- they always did them because I complained about issues that were fixed in the newer versions...

Never if everything works and you're not missing any fucntions. Unless they come up with somthing new.

a E60 can only be updated a maximum of 13 times in its lifespan before you have to change out the whole module.
Actually it is specific module dependant. A PRO NAV (CCC) equipped car might have 25 modules or more. Only a few of them are limited (progammable arrays). The FINAL REPORT should tell owner about any of these modules that may have a specific limitation. My last report had the HUD at 26 more times and my ARS at 11 more times (3 prior updates since delivery).

I'm curious about how frequently CIP versions are loaded onto our E60 computers ... related to having 3rd party tuning software over-written.
Not every update is going to get into the DME related areas that MIGHT cause an overwrite. I can only remember one of my three updates impacting the DME and it may still not have overwritten that specific code. I'm not sure how you would tell unless your butt dyno tells you or the vendor does a readout for you.

2. AUX install
3. Early transmission upshift (failed)
4. Early transmission upshift (retry and successful)
5. TCU failed

I have had no updates, as of yet.

My SA and the dealer's svc mgr both state that if it works - don't ?fix? the car. I would imagine they have had too many updates go wrong.

However, I guess I will need and update when the new iPod module is installed.

Wish me luck in July!
