My grease gun has not been used on any car for the last two decades so I would be very surprised to find that my BMW needed it.

This goes along with other discussions of "lifetime fluids", "lifetime components", etc..... modern manufacturers have largely jumped on the band wagon of Lifetime Stuff, mostly a marketing pitch that in fact redefines "lifetime" to a much shorter period. Maybe three or four years, because so many vehicles are leased. Maybe a 100,000 miles, because it's a nice round number and because (Americans at least) don't seem to keep vehicles very long. As BMW moved to its "free maintenance" for 4 years, they have a lot more lifetime stuff than they did before (see Mike Miller's recommendations on BMW maintenance intervals).
Don't expect the lifetime suspension components to last you like those fitted with zirc fittings would. I haven't been under my car yet, but your question prompts me to have a look. With my other vehicles, as suspension components, u-joints, etc. fail I replace them with those that have grease fittings.
