Blessed with good luck yesterday after my E60 aquaplaned across all 3 motorway lanes, onto a hard sholder, up and embankment and hit a tree headon @ 50-60mph. Got out with just whiplash and a grazed knee (where brake pedal kicked back on hitting tree) and very shaken.

Be glad youre driving such a safe car and hope you never need all its safety features.

Glad you're ok. Out of curiocity, how fast were you going when aquaplaned ?

Glad you're relatively OK. Cars come and go but once a person goes, it's gone for good.

Hi,

I am glad you got out well. Can you describe what got you in to that situation?

Was it some kind of driver fault or did the car did something out of whack?

Glad you made it out ok. How fast were you going? When it rains here in NY, I do not drive as aggressively in fear of hydroplaning.

Just as well you don't live here then.
Rain rain and more rain.
Yes that would be a problem for me. I have little trust with wet weather traction.

Glad you came out of that relatively unscathed when it could have been so much worse from what you described!
This is when it pays to buy better - and the 5-series is one of the best!

Hope you are able to get back in the drivers seat quickly - wont blame you if your next car is a Jaguar XF or better still, the XJ.
Few people have seen the XJ in the flesh but when it comes out, BMW Audi and Merc have a whole new level of challenge to deal with.
The new F10 and the latest 7-series are just underwhelming when you look at the performance and interior package of these new motors

Anyways, glad you are well and thanks for posting.
Yes, Jaguar XFR is a monster car. I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Jag but I test drove the XF Supercharged and was very impressed.

I don't see why people affraid and baby their cars so much on the wet. Yeah sure i don't drive in the wet like a mad man but i don't see it as a problem.I usually do 50mph on twisties with not even a hint of slip. Aquaplanning is mostly affected by speed, accelerating and tyres (depth, pressure)
not on drive position. The supposed 50/50 weight distribution on the e60 actually helps.

That's a sad sight but glad you got out ok!

I would also be interested to hear how it happened because i had a lucky escape in mine a couple of weeks ago that has really put a huge dent in the trust in my cars wet weather traction.

I was travelling on the motorway in the rain, doing about 50 mph. I accelerated hard and at the same time was moving into the outside lane, as soon as the auto box kicked down i lost all control and was heading for the barrier on the central reservation. I managed to avoid hitting it but vered off into the other direction. Luckily i didn't hit any of the cars around me or things could have been a lot worse. This happened so fast but i managed to wrestle the car under control. A scary few seconds, believe me!

I have never experienced anything like this before and put it down to me either hitting an oil patch or deep water at the moment the box kicked down. These diesel cars produce huge amounts of torque and i believe this added to the problem.

Seeing this post though has made me wonder about the safety of our cars. I consider myself extremely lucky that i didnt end up in the same situation you did.
