Got a flat tire w/ runflats... what to do?

Procedure for repairing runflat tires:

1. You may continue to drive on a "flat" runflat for a reasonable distance at reasonable speeds. I believe the suggestion is 50 mph for as much as 100 miles. Anyway, you need to take the car to a BMW dealer, or tire shop.

2. Purchase 4 Michelin non-runflat tires.

3. Have dealer install 4 Michelin non-runflat tires, and dispose of runflats.

4. Your car will drive better than ever. It's like you purchased a completely new car. So step 4 is to enjoy it.

5. Thank me later, for the advice.

Guys - I got a flat tonight in my right rear runflat (Bridgestone 245/40/18). I hit a really bad pothole on the highway coming home from Atlantic City. I went to the nearest gas station, filled it up and drove off. 2 minutes later, the sensor went off again. I made it home no problem, but the tire clearly has no pressure in it.

What's the deal with run flats? Can they be repaired or am I going to find myself buying a new tire tomorrow morning? If it's a nail, is it repairable? I know if it's the sidewall, I'm screwed, but the outside looks fine.

For some reason, my mechanic told me during my last visit that with runflats on a new car, it's best to go back to the dealer where I bought it and see if they can fix or replace it. However, I'm pretty sure these tires are not under warranty and that my BMW dealer won't do jack.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks!
I had the same problem in a very bad pothole. You know what ? The tyre was intact, ... but the rim was hardly bent. So, if you din't ride too long with your flat tyre, maybe you won't have to change it.
I had ordered a new rim ($550), but my tyre specialist advised me to try to let the rim repaired. It cost me only $45, the wheel is well balanced. No problem, so I canceled my order for the new rim.

But when my rear RF tyres were worn, I bought 4 Michelin PS2 non RF ! You all know the good reasons to change ... My tyre specialist even found a guy who bought my front RF Bridgestone's 50% the price !

With RFT, tyres don't work as fuses, and it's the rims that get damaged !

And wait for the next puncture and decide how to get the punctured tyre/wheel home or to a tyre shop.

Incidentally, advising people to use a dealer to fit tyres is rather extravagant (or do they do a better "job"?).

I agree it's bad practice to repair runflats.

It would have to be a heavily forensically investigated accident (percentages again) to detect that an RFT had been repaired.

Dead easy, if a tyre blowout causes an accident, all you have to do is dismount the tyre and look inside, the repair is easlily visible.

To find a remap you would have to send the ECU to BMW, plus there is an easy cause and effect link with a tyre repair/blowout, not so with option spec rims or a remap.

He should have a spare tire. My car came with runflats and has a spare. I just kept the spare when I got my Michelins.

Read Step # 1 again. See where it says take car to dealer or tire shop? Wasn't really advocating one over the other....

I was quoting your step 3. I wonder what proportion of us would EVER consider using a dealer to undertake anything to do with tyres?

Wow. Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm going to take my car to a local shop and see if they can detect EXACTLY what the problem is. If it's a nail, I'll have it fixed. If it's the sidewall or the actual wheel, I'll be riding on my spare for a few days.

As for going to my BMW dealership, I see no reason to go there. It's not like they will do anything for me.

I had a nail in one of my RFT last week. I called America's Tire, they told me due to the policy with Bridgestone, they won't repair RFT.

I simply went to a small auto shop, they fixed my tire in few minutes.
That's probably why my mechanic said he couldn't work on the tire. I have the Bridgestone RFT's too. Hmmmm...

Especially if you have wide rims it'll not readily fit into the donut recess - where you gonna put it? Or where are you going to put the luggage or the wife?

ABC

To hell with the luggage or wife, that's an expensive rim he needs to look after.
