I am trying to buy a set of 172s that dont come with TPMS. My existing 124/RFT have the TPMS. A few questions:

- are they interchangeable?
- is it worth spending the $ to remove them from my 18s and get them mounted to my 19s?
- do i really need TPMS if I dont have runflats?

thanks.

Yes, a halfway decent tire shop should be able to change them out for you.

Yes, if you want the system to work. It might even throw iDrive errors if you don't have any sensors mounted.

- do i really need TPMS if I dont have runflats?
Yes, TPMS is a great safety feature, without runflats it's even more important, not less.

thanks.

Please see answers above. Good luck.

Your car will show the Flat tire warning on the dash without them, and the dealership will not turn it off for you, for safety and liability purposes. Swap the TPMS for buy new ones for $200.

This isn't strictly true. There is nothing on the rim or in the valve to act as a monitor. It's simply an ABS trick which is triggered if it is behaving oddly. That is of course if the US is the same system as the UK.

You can buy any rim and tyre you like and fit it. The pressure monitor doesn't reside in the rim, tyre or valve. Its just registered through the ABS.

I guess you've never seen these. For FTM, there is none of these. But the newer models equiped with tire pressure monitor, TPMS is necessary or you keep getting error from iDrive.

Not quite true, you are thinking of FTM which is what I have on my car. TPMS does actually have a sensor in the valve stem to monitor pressures.

pjinca is correct. Earlier E60's had the FTM which used the brake sensor to measure wheel spin and alert the driver about a flat tire. The newer cars have the TPMS which requires the sensors...
