Wouldn't the right thing to do be to let your dad trade his car for a 550 or whichever car he wants? I have to say I cannot understand why he would even consider trading the 750 for a 530.

I would not take the 7er over the 5er, for the same reasons DD545i mentioned, but trading it in for a 550i (E60 or F10), oh yes!

Personally I prefer things the other way around and was very happy when I bought my dad the new car of his dreams.

Did someone say the "7" is not as sporty? My boss drives a 2010 750li with the M package and that thing is scary fast and corners like a beast. With the sport mode on it peels out like crazy!

I was recently looking at used 550's and 750's. My wife didn't want the 7 and I was having a hard time with the 5. We settled on an M5. Love it except the SMG takes some getting used to. If I was you I'd go with the 7 unless you're really young. Even my wife thought the 7 was kind of an old guys car. And I'm no kid.
