I think he means gills, as in the side vents on the engine compartment. I think the Buick Lucerne has either 3 or 4 per side, depending on the engine size.

Buicks had those "portholes" a long time ago, like 40s and 50s, and that is what the Buick Lucerne is referring to. Old Roadmasters had those. Harley Earl put those on. http://www.michaelfurman.com/docs/gal_44.html

They are legitimate for cooling in some cars. In others they are just design allusions to ventilation ports and to the external exhausts of old cars from the classic era. Cords had cool ones in the 1930s. http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/cord3601.htm
Right on about the Buicks. The three holers were the Super and the four holers were the Roadmasters. Automatic transmissions showed up in the form of the Dynaflow. I kinda hated that because the Buick standard transmissions had a classic upscale musical tone through the gears.

Like the others said above, Buick is what comes to my mind when I see or think about side vents. As JDN mentioned, my dad taught me many moons ago to count the portholes on Buicks to see if there were three or four...

Here's a page I just found that covers the Buick porthole history:

All others, especially Buick, are copycats.
Buicks have had them for over half a century. 4 holes meant it was top of the line...

Edit: My bad, I didn't read the entire post....Forgive the repitition

Actually, I always thought that side vents (gills) are a nod to aeronautics design.

For instance the spitfire:

I always found the z3m to be particularly evocative of this:

Oddly though - for this first time I just noticed that the z4m doesn't have the gill - weird

Actually the pic is more important than this thread, to me.

A 52 year old Rally World Champion pic

Gills-507werk.jpgThe side gills in the current M models are definitively a reminiscence to BMW?s 507 coupe from the 1950s. It was a breathtaking design by Graf Goertz and presented as BMW?s first V8 sportscar in 1955, only around 250 were built.

By the way, the two books profiled on the homepage at www.michaelfurman.com are awesome. Just beautiful, indulgent photography of the most interesting design elements on fantastic cars. Pornography for car guys. I have them both. (No, I'm not related to Furman, nor do I get profit from them. I believe I bought them for myself/ from my infant son for Christmas.)

This is true.

I have owned two Buicks, a Electra 225 Limited '73 with a 455 cid engine
and a '76 Century with a typical small block 350.

Did like the Electra a lot! It was fully loaded!

But as you can see, side vents can be found on the '73 Electra but not anymore
on the '76 Century.
