I drive a 2004 model 525i M Sport.
Car is in for a service and the loaner is a 523i SE.
I always thought to myself 'glad i chose the 525 because its not as much of a guzzler as the 530 but faster than the base model \o/'
However after driving it it feels far far faster than i thought it would. Infact id say it wasnt much slower (if at all) than my car. Possibly even a little quicker in spots.
Does anyone know what hp engine would be in my 2004 525. I looked up the BM site and this years 523i has 177bhp which cant be as much.

It would be that simple if he had a 2005 525i, but he has a 2004 525i, which has 189 hp and 181 ft-lbs of torque. The loaner they gave him was probably a 2005 523i, which has 174 hp and 170 ft-lbs of torque.
The 2005 525i has 215 hp and 184 ft-lbs of torque.

I had a 520i with 170bhp (M54 engine) and changed to a 523i (with the new N52 engine) producing 174bhp.
I've also driven a 525i with the 192bhp (m54) engine and the 523i felt smoother, quieter, reved more freely and felt as fast as the 525i. It made the 520i/525i M54 feel old tech. Although I only had the 520i for 10 months, the 523i test drive was enough to make me change.
Like yourself, I can't understand how the fairly small additional increase of 4bhp and 10nm made such a vast difference. Maybe BMW were holding back.![Think](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/think.gif)

I tried 0-160 km/h in both cars. My car got 26.1, while the 523i got 25.2. the in-gear acceleration is even the same on 4th gear, 9.4 s for 80-120 km/h for both cars (this is a BMW figure). IMHO the difference between the 523i and the 520i is basically in the 0-50 km/h range because of the earlier delivery of torque in the 523i.
I would not pay any amount of money to upgrade from the 520i to the 523i, may be I would pay to upgrade to the 525i.
