I just got back from a 900 miles road trip the first weekend I had my car I noticed a couple things. The first one is, when I put it in reverse the passenger mirror only goes down so you can see your tire as you back up once in a while. It does not do it everytime. Is there something I am doing differnetly that makes it go down sometimes and not others?

When I am playing a CD and looking at the disply of the CD on the screen under it it says car phone.....? whats that meam? I dont think I have blue tooth, and there is no car phone in the car.

last questions....it thinks i need to tighten my gas cap ever time i drive it. sometimes it turns on after 1 min others 2 hours after driving. is that a common problem?

Thanks so much for all your help, sorry if these have been asked before. on the other side this was the best 900 mile road trip ever! This is my first BMW and I think it could be the first of many.

For the passenger mirror to dip, the mirror selector switch needs to be in the driver mirror position.
Audio: can't help you
Gas cap: sounds like a sensor problem. Others know better whether it's a common problem. I haven't come across it in the discussions since early this year, when I joined.

Try to tighten it more when you have filled your tank. 2-3 clicks.

Edit: I remembered right, this has been discussed before. Maybe this helps you out on this issue

As I recall you bought an '04 545. On the car phone issue, what does it actually say? Is it the words "car phone"? Have not seen that in my '04 545. The early cars, before Bluetooth was finally introduced, could get a phone that plugged into the center console. Perhaps the prior owner had this and the software was updated to make it operational. Grasping at straws here...

Prior post highlighted the need to have the side mirror control set to the driver's side for the dipping feature to work. If it is set properly and still only funtions sporadically, time for a trip to the dealer...

As for the gas cap, having similar issue with my '04 545. Dealer has looked at and of course it never happens for them, leaving no codes in the computer. Another person had this issue and bought a new gas cap (easily switched) and it solved the issue. Have not tried, but I think the rubber/plastic gasket is just getting old and is not making a good seal, setting off the warning. If your car is under warranty, see if you can get it happen while the service guy is in the car, other wise try a new cap, it's only $15.85 according to realoem.com...

thank you for the info! I took some pictures real quick of the "car phone" message. I have this thing in the arm rest, i don't really know what its for, there are no wires or anything anywhere, so I dont think a phone use to be there.

how do I tell what version software I have?

I guess you would know how the car you bought is equipped but the car certainly thinks there is a phone there. You don't indicate any details about your car in your sig. so it's impossible to guess how old it is, whether you just got it and it's the latest model, etc. but there is certainly something that makes the car think it has a phone nearby.

The build date is 05/04. It's weird because if I go to the communication menu, it just tells me to contact my BMW dealer.

It really looks like you have Bluetooth capabilities...

I see a signal strength meter on the bottom as well...

I would think if the car was not BT compatible then you wouldn't have those icons on the screen

Have you tried to sync up a phone to it?

Do you have any phone settings in the IDrive settings menu?

I have turned the BT on in my phone to search for devices, but nothing came up. When I click to the communication menu there are 2 options. One option does say phone, but under it, it says contact BMW service center for more information. The other one is the typical BMW emergency help thing.

To sync up a phone, that would be done in the communication menu yes?

An 05/04 build should be Bluetooth capable but as I recall for those early cars it did require a software update. Check out this PDF...

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?act=attach...st&id=46086

The signal strength indicator is not from BT, it is cell reception in your area for the phone used by BMW Assist, as I recall. My Jan '04 build 545 has it as well and I know for sure I don't have BT in that car...

And yes, if it were active, you'd see it under the Communications section of the iDrive. Print the PDF and bring it to your dealer if you want BT activated...
