Default gearbox type confirmation

hey guys i have a e60 2004 530i (6speed auto) and just need to confirm its a ZF 6HP26? its a UK import and i can provide the VIN if that may help....

i need to confirm it before i order the parts, also my mechanic says he needs 15L of oil to fully flush it out...sounds a bit to much?no?

Also i have read about the oem fuild that was used in this zf box some people are saying shell others are saying oem zf fluid...so i am a bit confused in regards to which fluid to actually buy.

thanks boys

Hi

If your car is a 2004 built model , the automatic transmision is a 6HP19Z , and the motor is a M54-3.0

Oil consumtion , by oile change about 4-5 Liter , by complete emtying the gearbox and torque conveter about 8-8.5 Liter ( gearbox must be dismounted from the car in order to take out the torque converter ánd be able to emty it ! )

Oilfilter and underhousing of the gearbox is one unit !

Oil for the automatic transmision according to BMW , must be Shell M-1375.5 ATF , or ATF oil from ZF , and thats is Lifeguard6 ( proberly the Shell oil aswell :-) ).

Alternativ you can use Mobil LT71141 ATF oil to a 1/3 of the cost ( works just as well , 8 years experience with this oil in my E60/525iA )

NB: ATF = Automatic Transmision Fluid

Regarding the flushing oil your mechanic wants to use , I have no clue , sorry , but I'l mean it's not nesecerry if the gearbox is drained complete , or you make 2 changes ( 4-5 Liter ) in 1-2 months or 1000-2000 km and a filter/housing change the 2nd time.

Regards
BenAnd

wow....really appreciate the reply buddy. people like you are a great asset and make forums such as this one work.

in regards to my mechanic he wants to flush the system e.g. get as much of the old oil out of the torque convertor without actually taking the gearbox out hence the large volume of atf required.

I need to buy a 20L drum of either the zf or shell....any decent links for online products?

cheers

Hi

Thanks .-)

The Shell & ZF ATF oil can only be purchased by either BMW of ZF ( to my knowlegde ) , about 40 Euro/L

Mobil ATF oil about 13 Euro/L ( look it up on E-bay etc. )

You can order the correct ZF fluid from thectsc.com for a reasonable price. I know others have used other fluids but why risk it?

If he's really flushing it then the amount he's saying isn't too crazy. Just a drain/fill takes 6 or so, and that doesn't get anything out of the torque converter
