so called high octane gas is the biggest ripoff going. Thats why the CEO's make millions per year. Next to nothing for additives and they charge way more. Every company goes to the same depot and loads tankers from the same tank. It's all the same...all marketing

Oil
There's even a choice of 'oil' for us Europeans now. Anybody else with a 525/30/35d tried the any of the premium diesel fuels (e.g. BP Ultimate Diesel)? Is there a difference in performance/smoothness/economy? Sorry ... a bit off topic!

Wrong... It is not all the same. This has been discussed at length here before. Suffice to say that you get what you pay for and that there are some real differences in different manufactures formulas (additives). I use Shell V-Power.

It is my understanding that the cars are tuned to run on 91 octane(RON), and anything beyond that octane is not needed.

Its not the same anyone see the 5th Gear test that they did? In a regular 87nhp car yes higher octane and lower octane gas is the same. But in a BMW higher compression engine its not.

In the winter, now that I have Blizzaks mounted, I'm driving much less aggressively. Therefore I am filling with midgrade till the spring. Midgrade here in Ohio is typically 89 octane, as measured by the (RON+MON)/2 formula. Dealer assures me that midgrade is just fine for the engine.

Springtime I'm back to premium.

Do you notice any drivability or power loss with 89 gas?

Not being sarcastic but will your dealer assure you that he will pick up the bill IF YOU have engine problems from using 89 octane Just maybe he didn't read the manual about fuel specifications page 169.IMO its just not worth the small amount of savings between the two octanes.to take the chance. Good luck
cheers

Actually this is not quite true.... Yes, all companies get gasoline from the same regional distribution center, but, after they do, they add detergents and other cleaners to the gas prior to shipping to the gas stations.

Also, there was a discussion a while back on Top Tier gas. Check out www.toptiergas.com
