I had my car for three months before I could finally get the door programmed.

First clear everything, by holding the outside buttons for about 20-30 secs.

You have to hold the remote to the mirror and program it first. (sometimes holding it behind the mirror works better)

Then you have to hit the learn button on the garage opener unit, and then go back in the car and hold the desired button to be programmed.

I hope this helps.

Cool

Thanks so much, guys!! I took and tried all of your suggestions, and found out that 1)my remote battery is really low since I have not used the device for years; 2)my garage door opener has a rolling code and I need to push the "training" button on the motor, and pair the car device 3 times within 30 seconds!! It works now!!!

I've never made it work. My garage door opener is Stanley Securecode which is not compatible with HomeLink I think. Anyway this is my first post. Great forum!
You can get it work, just buy a LIFT MASTER receiver and connect it to your garage door receiver in paralle and it will work

Thank you for your suggestion. I'll try that. I've had my 530i for over a year and almost gave up on that

I thought I was bad at over a year to get the opener to work but I feel better now that others have had problems too. I finally called HOMELINK and they walked me through a number of tries before placing the remote against the back of the rearview mirror while I pushed the 2 buttons did the trick.

I am having trouble pairing my garage door opener in my 01, I am pressing the middle and left button while pressing the garage door opener button and pointing it at my opener in the car and it will not work. The lights blick slow, but never rapidly as described in my owner's manual.
Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

That doesn't quite seem like the correct method. I'd use the instructions on the Homelink website vs the owners manual.

I had to:
  1. hold the buttons to clear out old codes
  2. hold the remote to the back of mirror while pressing both buttons
  3. press program on the opener
  4. press the mirror button three times within 30 seconds
