I would never run anything less than 91 octane on a forced induction car - period.
California 91 octane summer formulation is about the worst you can get - there have been multiple car manufacturers that have had to detune their cars (after release) due to detonation issues.
To my understanding the BMW has an adaptive timing system that listens for detonation and decreases ignition timing as detonation is detected. Not only do you lose power / get worse fuel economy on the high det portion of the ECU map, but everytime you are detonating (due to shitty gas) it is like someone taking a hammer to your pistons. And believe me, you are detonating if you are running 89 octane on a 3.5 turbo...
