Hi;

I recently ditched my Dunlop runflats after 35K KM and moved to Michelin PS2's. I'm quite happy with them. But they're aren't runflat and so I bought the BMW spare wheel kit. I hate spending that kind of exorbitant money on something that I hope never to use. But then I'm reminded of a buddy who begrudged spending over $3000 for a life raft for a sailing trip. It saved his life when the boat sank in the middle of the Atlantic. Perhaps I'm getting off lightly.

Anyway - does anyone else have one of these spare tire kits? How well does it fit in the space under the mat in the trunk/boot? The guys at the dealer had to remove the liner to get it in and even then the board doesn't seem to be sitting quite level. Nothing rattles so I'm not that distressed - just curious how well it installed in other peoples cars. Did you also have to remove the liner?

Thanks.

OK. Thanks. Looks like it's best if it's removed. Not quite sure how to modify it to fit the wiheel. Now I've got find a place to store the liner.

Cheers

To get the "chocolate button" spare in the well, there are two options:

1. Remove the liner

2. Modify the liner - the slots around the periphery that hold in the plastic dividers need to be removed. They should be pretty easily cut off with a craft knife or Dremel.
I took the easy route and removed the liner, but put some corrugated cardboard over the top of the polystyrene to afford a little protection.

My spare wheel lid drops down flush, as it should do.

I relocated the two modules that are under the spare (the PDC and the micro power module) to the right side of the trunk (behind the liner) and bought a full size spare. Be advised that a 245/35/19 will NOT fit completely in the hole provided. I'm going to have to look around for a 255/30 or something like that.

Cost me ?85 for the BMW wheel and new Continental tyre at my local tyre factor.
Already got a wheel brace.
I use a screw jack from a Vauxhall Carlton / Omega / Vectra (I cut the plastic bearing plate on the jack to fit into the BMW socket under the sill).
Never had to use it in anger, but it's fine on my drive!!
