Mmmmm, I am loathed to make a trip to the dealer. The filler flap unlocks with the door locks, but when I press the edge of the flap it won't spring open. I have taken the boot apart and tried the manual override, but this just overrides the lock and doesn't seem capable of springing the flap open.
Any ideas guys for getting it open? I guess then it just needs some lubrication.
Thank you

Thank you DonV, done it. A finger on each of the four corners pushing in and releasing very quickly did it! What an amazing forum, post a problem and a few minutes later an answer from the other side of the atlantic! I love the car again

If your spring is not working it doesn't mean you can't open the fuel door, you can still open it if you have long nails or try a screw driver. The spring just push the door up so there's more space to stick your finger in between the gap. But of course get it fix ASAP.
But personally I like the fuel door on the E39 compare with the E46 or the E60 with the spring and stuff. One more thing to fix if it break.
