Interesting. My local supermarket is 91.9p/l and the BP garage is 94.9p/l (oops that could be city diesel). 3p/l difference so only 2 pounds per tank difference.

Actually is there a standard BP diesel as well as an Ultimate?

There is...the problem with ultimate is that they don't do it at all stations, only the higher volumes sites. The price difference between standard and ultimate varies from one end of the country to the other, you would have thought that the % difference would be consistent. Up in the North East we are paying southern motorway service station prices for ultimate in standard stations (I know as I am traveling from NE to SW on a regular basis)

I agree that the BMW advertised MPG figures are wildly optimistic. My 525 gets around 5mpg less than it should on the combined cycle. My other car ( non BM ) is more or less spot on.
Maybe they design car to achieve good MPG in the lab., at the expense of real life..
Im looking at changing E60 now & have made a point of resetting trip computer before test drive, then go on a real journey, like journey to work. Then check what you get in real life. If it achieves a lot less than they ( falsely ) advertise, walk away & tell them why!!. Very amusing.

I know this sounds strange but I was getting 37 before they updated to 23.02 (on the same commute)!

You're not the first to report a loss of mpg following later CIPs...

 

Where exactly are they (any manufacturer, not just BMW) advertising that "you will get x or y mileage"? If anything, they seem to go out of their way to state that "performance may vary" and that measured figures apply to a precisely given standard cycle, not to real life. Whether that's fair or appropriate is a different question.

 

I guess I put it rather clumsily. My main point is, disregard any advertised figures as they are grossly inaccurate.
Reset fuel computer before test drive. Go on a realistic journey. If you find that what you get in real life is not acceptable or affordable, then walk away & try another car / brand!.
E.g, if you want a BMW that gets 35Mpg, then it is quite likely that you will get this with one that shows 45Mpg on manufacturers figures!.

 

I wonder if the system can in some cases revert to US gallons (default) after a CIP upgrade?

I was getting 41mpg in the summer and now 36mpg in my first diesel winter (well when it arrives in the UK !). Mainly town and country driving.
