I replaced all 4 tires in my 2005 530i last November due to the inspection failure. The rear 2 tires exposed the wire mesh inside the rubber due to bimmer's negative wheel camber. When tire guy took out the old tire, I did not see any pressure monitor device in the rim. How does our FTM work then ?

My Ride: 2008 550I LOADED, all options except HUD and NV
It uses sensors to monitor rotational mass, when that changes (due to loss of pressure) you get a warning. The sensor is not located on the wheel, that would be TPMS. I think it uses the ABS sensors but not 100% on that. That is why when you reset you should be rolling so that the sensor can get a baseline of the rotational mass of the wheels/tires and set accordingly.

Flat Tire Monitor - The concept
The Flat Tire Monitor keeps track of the inflation pressures in the four mounted tires as you drive. The system provides an alert whenever the inflation pressure drops significantly in relation to the pressure in another tire. In the event of a pressure loss, the rolling radius and therefore the rotation speed of the wheels change. This change is detected and is reported as a flat tire.
