This must be the feature with more undelivered promises of a s/w fix (well, mp3 with pro nav is the top one, this is the runner-up).

Always had that problem, never got it fixed, neither with s/w u/g nor with sensitivity adjustments.

And yes, it's a real pain in the *** to know that all other brands, from Sweeden to Italy, from Japan to France, from the very cheap models to the top ones, seem to get the auto headlights function right, with or without trees, tunnels, clouds, high sun, low sun, indoor start, outdoor start.

My conclusion is that *a lot* of E60 suffer from this, as more than once I've followed a fellow E60 owner observing his lights going stupidly on and off for no reason whatsoever.

I'm glad it's a feature of little relevance.

I don't trust the auto headlights because it is on most of the time since I parked indoor. The auto headlights will be on all day if you start your car in a dark place even though you spent most of the time in bright light. So it depend on the lighting condition when you start your car.

The E60 is the first car I've ever had auto headlights on and I'm not keen on using them. A couple of times now I've been driving in conditions where the road goes from being open on both sides into narrow tree lined two way roads. I noticed that the headlights were coming on when I went into the shady areas under the trees and then going off again in the next clearing. The weather was generally a bit overcast and drizzly so I would want my headlights on all the time. Because the sun was breaking through the clouds in places, the guy I was following must have been wondering why I was putting my lights on and off every few minutes. The upshot is that I don't bother with the auto headlights any more and just do what I've always done - use my judgement and if in doubt put them on and leave them on.

It should not be that way. The sensor should sense when light and dark and control the headlights accordingly. If you start your car in a parking garage and the lights go on, then drive outside into sunshine the lights should go off.

If not, check the sensor.

I think Kadonny is correct. I start my car in my garage, headlights go on, back out of the driveway, headlights go off. I think an earlier posting regarding sun lower in the sky in Fall is also correct, because I notice my headlights go on when it is still bright out, with occasional long shadows. Just my .02.

Dealer promised a fix in 1 or 2 software updates.
We''ll see.....
