The dealer said that the noise is the CD and or DVD head resetting back to the beginning of the disk over and over again. BMW considers this standard and is within "BMW's Tolerances" Every time my car goes in I mention it and they tell me the same thing. The dealer(Perillo) has been great for fixing these things, but this is one thing they have not replaced.

They still have my ride, and no word on what they are planning to do, besides the fact that they will fix it.

Did your dealer heard the sound? Does it sound like the clip I posted above? For the longest time my dealer just ignored it saying they couldn't do anything unless they knew what it sounded like.

All I know the sledge hammer mechanical sound is NOT OK. Does anyone know what part they would need to replace, just curious?

Yea yours sounds completely different than mind does. I only hear the click sounds when the disk is in the drive. Here is one thing that you should do. I did this with my 02 X5. My started did not sound like right. So I brought the car in and had BMW take a look at it(under warranty). When I picked the car up, they told me that it was operating normal and that nothing was wrong with it. My response was "I have never heard a X5 sound like this on start up. Could you start a X5 that you have here so I can hear the difference for my reference and make sure I am not crazy." There was a X5 in the pickup area so they started it up. I then said well just for shits and giggles lets compare this to mine. So the SA started my car and the first thing he said was.... something is not right. I then asked how can i pick up the car and be told it is fine and you just told me it was not right........ needless to say they replaced my starter. They new the next step would be to talk to a manager.

I also had a clicking sound in the front end which the dealers could never detect. I then told them to jump in the car with me and I will make it click for you. Sure enough the Tech and the SA heard the clicking.

Sometimes you need to do the obvious for these dealers. If there are no error codes or no bulletin then they don't always "find the problem".

good luck

Thanks for all your input.

I just picked up the car, and the dealer replaced the unit since it was under warranty. No more gremlins in my cd audio system controller.
