Vehicle Code section 5201:

5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the
vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from
swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible,
and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. "

Does the retractable count as "swinging"?

Nobody has to know it is retractable besides unless you grab it you cannot tell it is not screwed in....

Me- "Officer why am I being pulled over, was I speeding?"

Officer- "You are missing your front Plate"

Me while talking to officer I push the button on remote- "Are you sure you have the right car? I could swear it's up there, Maybe someone stole it..."

Officer goes to take and look again....

If I were getting one, I would most likely get the rhoplate.

Let us know which way you end up going?

So get this. After I bitched for about a week with no replies from the dealership about my front bracket and how the car needed one, I decided to Yelp about them and gave them a bad review. Wouldn't you know it. They called me today and said they have my bracket and if I wanted to pick it up or have it mailed. I don't know if it's coincidence, but all I know is that they are sending me my bracket now. I also threatened them that I would not give all 10's on my survey from BMW. Apparently that is very important to them. So since my car already has the holes in the front, I'm gonna use the oem bracket. Too funny.

I don't have a front plate, I live in the LA area, and drive through the San Fernando valley every day. I'm guessing I've been lucky, I figure sooner or later I'll get a ticket. I have heard of people getting tickets when they leave their car parked in a public parking lot; one of my co-workers got one parked at a Park-n-Ride, another at the airport, in a public lot (not WallyPark or another private lot). The only time I got a ticket for no plate, I was driving through the little town of Bridgeport, in the mountains about 50 miles north of Mammoth. When I asked the CHP officer what the big deal was, he said they needed the plate for the red light cameras. Funny, since Bridgeport doesn't even have a traffic signal!!! I zip-tied the plate on, took it to the local CHP office and they signed it off. Got home and removed the plate and put it back in the trunk.

I keep my temporary (now permanent) DMV paper on my windshield and only 1 ticket so far in 4 years - which was a "fix-it" ticket but I decided to just pay the fine instead.
