I use 2x10x14 lumber to add 1.5-inch ground clearance for my E60 Sport and E90 Sport. With the additional ground clearance, my floor jack fits under either vehicle. I use a total of 4 pieces of wood (one under each tire) when switching summer/winter tires. The additional ground clearance also allow me to use conventional ramps for engine oil changes. The wood is cut at an angle to make it easier to roll onto it.

The picture also shows a round black jack pad adapter with a color-coded no-scratch wheel socket set.

I just jack it up at the center point and either use the jack stands or the ramp. I do not trust myself driving onto the ramp, well that and the fact that it's too damn low, even with just my stock sport suspension.
OP, look into getting the low profile floor jack at Harbor Freight. I got it when it was on sale for 60 bucks, the 3 ton capacity which is sufficient enough for most of the repairs on our e60. I know i will get flame for promoting cheap products from HF but it works for me so far.
