It finally snowed just an inch or two today. It was wet snow. I actually had to push an M3 in front of my home on a very slight hill so conditions were not good. But even with the dunlop M3s and approx. 100lbs in the trunk over the axle, the 550 just hates to go from 0-5mph in the snow. Once underway everything is fine, but you have to try hard not to spin the rear tires even on level ground. ?? The car must be completely useless without snows. Any suggestions for me to help with traction during initial takeoff?
Thanks, DRP

DSC isnt helping?
I dont drive anything except real 4X4 SUVs in snow and thats like a handfull of times a year so basically I have no clue how to drive a 550 in snow.
BUT... how about trying to start the car in 2nd or even 3rd gear if you have steptronic. SMG you can start off in 2nd but not in third. Step you can start off in 3rd i believe.

yep....when going uphill frfrom a standstill its very hard...I had to switch DSC off fully. I actually love the snow...I was drifting like crazy on an empty parking lot....wil try to upload videos once I borrow my friend's camera.
try this: With DSC off...push the car to 25-30mph, then quickly turn right or left and in the process of turning engage the handbrake briefly, you'll get to do sideward drift...and turn again while drifting sidewwards and the car will drift in a wide circle....really fun...

I actually press DTC once...I find the full DSC too intrusive on take-off. A bit of spin will help you get going.
Oh ya... that should be better... Never used DTC... LOL its either DSC on or DSC off for me so i forgot out the DTC feature.... but I guess its still doesnt help that well huh?

What can I say - Coming from the north of Sweden (actually not far from where almost every car manufacturer and car component manuf in the world test their traction and breaking systems under winter conditions) there is only one solution besides a 4x4 to get traction: change to M+S tires! Otherwise, leave the car.
DSC, DTC are just aids not miracles regardless of car brand. Besides, once you get moving, you'll have a even bigger problem and thats stopping the car!
Drive safely out there!
cheers

I have the WS50 snow tires and could not be happier with them, they already got me up my snow and ice covered driveway with the help of DTC/DSC. I was impressed, it did it an inch at a time for about 100 feet but got me up the driveway at a 40 degrees incline at least.

After living with my 545is for three winters and being resistant to installing snow tires on every year, I would definately get at least all weather Pirelli Nero M&S and save my runflats for when I return the car at the end of lease. I have been stuck because of light snow and the OEM tires are slick in the cold without snow anyway.
