Our "Motorplan" here in SA covers all services and mechanical break downs for 5 years or 100,000Km

Only tire wear is not included

The latest BMW requirements LL04 ( Long life 2004 ) which were set for the new magnesium engines, and which is compatable with most older engines has made castrol release "Castrol SLX LL04" which is? 0W-30

So LL04 is in place of the weight?

Maybe this lends some truth to what I read some where on the internet that all synthetic 30 weight oils are the same just packaged differently. 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 are all the same oil but the makers just label them differently because that is what we are used to.

My SA said BMW (Bring My Wallet) and the oil. He told me 5 - 30. Could not find Castrol in that weight so used Mobil 1. SA said it works, put it in, signed off on the maintenance booklet and sent me on my way short 50 euro's.

No LL04 stands for Long Life 2004 requirements ( a BMW standard )

There are 2 castrol oils which meet these requirements

There names are "CASTROL SLX LL04 0W-30" and "CASTROL TXT LL04 5W-30"

They are different oils but both meet LL04 requirements

Currently here in SA dealers use "CASTROL TXT LL01 5W-30" exclusivley for non //M engines, this will be replaced by the LL04 variant when it becomes available here

Hey Ron - I had to use Mobil 1 also but the price was right! Are you back in the land of the free oil change yet? We missed you at the last meet!

My dealer here in Germany charges 200 euro which at todays exchange rate is a little over 255 dollars? ? If you bring your own oil the charge for the filter and labor is 50 euro or about 65 dollars.? So it cost me a little over 100 bucks for a fresh tank of Mobil 1? ?

Something interesting - I showed up with my 8.5 qts of 5W-30 just like the owners manual says only to find out I bought the wrong weight?? ?? The dealer informed me they needed 0W-30 and sent me out in a loaner to make the exchange.

You may want to make a note for when your day comes.

Yes, I used the Mobil 1 0W-30 in the Boston cold winter in my Volvo. Otherwise, I use Mobil 1 10W-30.

I just love this forum. You learn something new everyday, loads and loads of humor (mostly in the Lounge - but not all of it). Thankfully, I do not believe I will have to get into the 0W-30 here in sunny and warm East Central Florida.

And if others are to believed maybe all synthetic oil is really the same viscosity (LL04?) and so whats the diff

People seem to be getting confused LL04 is just a set of standards from BMW

Castrol uses it in the name of 2 products that were developed in conjunction with BMW

0W-30 is not the same as 5W-30, a friend a castrol has shown me the viscosity tables for the oils and they are very differnt
