So i stopped by my dealer yesterday to finally get a drive in the 550i. Of course, the salesman is an idiot like usual, i ask him about the 550i in manual, o you can't get 550i in manual, hahahahaha. But anyway. Wow that car drives sweet. I cannot believe how smoothly the trans shifts, it felt like one continuous gear, the gear shifts were seamless. Pretty good power as well. Still got some thinking to do, but my new car decision is getting narrowed down.

Funny you should mention the transmission "..like one continuous gear". I gotta tell you, I have the 550i with a 6-speed manual and I drive two automatics as well, but when I am in the 550i, I have to make a conscious effort to leave my hand on the shifter because if I take it off and I space out, once I shift out of second gear, I may stay in third without much of a whine or lugging or anything. Another car I have is a 5 speed and it lets me know when to shift up or down - definite engine sounds coming from the side pipes - but with the Bimmer, it is soooo smooth, so quiet, that I have to remember it's a stick I'm driving and pay attention to the RPMs and/or the fuel consumption meter.

And yes, they DO come in 6-speed manual. You will not regret it one bit.

Regards.

I doubt the salesman was an idiot. You'll be hard pressed to get a manual without special ordering one. I guess I am glad you may buy a 550.

The 550 with a manual triggers a $1000 Tax Guzzler penalty in the USA

I was planning on getting a 545/550 since my last BMW was a 540i6.
But alas, the new 360hp seems to really have poor mileage compared to the old 282hp V8 and it is not _that_ much faster. hmmm. I used to get 17-18 in town and easily 28 on the hwy cruising 85mph.

But YES, the 550 manual is amazing to drive my CA let me take one home for a weekend back in January.

I have driven the e39 540 on many occasions, and I can assure you that the e 60 550 is that much faster. The 550 rivals my previous e46 M3.

If you're serious about ordering one with a manual, be sure you drive one before you do. I've driven the 545i/manual and found it a tad difficult to shift smoothly in traffic. I think the 530i is better in this respect.
