I plan on replacing the air filter element after the fire season here in Southern California. I know this change will be on me and not part of the BMW warranty.

The question I have is, should I also considering replacing the microfilters--I'm not sure if I need to replace them (just had that done by the dealer a couple of months ago). And the parts are not exactly bargain-priced.

Check your idrive for the microfilter, it should tell you how many miles left b4 you need to change. The computer is pretty accurate from what I know. I monitored my very closely and noticed the changes on the remaining mileage depending on the environment condition. As for air filter, just a visual should do the trick.

It should be ok, I wouldnt worry about it... unless you were RIGHT by the fire. open them up and take a look your self. run a dry vac at them and it'll suck out most of the junk... they're about what? $30 a pop... so about $60 -$70 DIY job.

I replaced mine recently but not because of the fires (it was due). I picked up one up at Autozone (impulse buy, the dealer was too far away heh) and they had a "due to fires 20% discount" on all air filters. An unexpected bonus on a relatively cheap part.
