I'm interested in buying a 2007 530i with a 6-speed manual. Unfortunately, here in Northern CA, it looks like it's impossible to find one to test drive, much less buy. A dealer wrote me this:

"I cannot find a 2007 530i with a manual transmission in any color in the state of California. If I were to advise you, I would place an order A.S.A.P. and you would have it in 6? weeks."

My questions:

1. Anyone else run into this problem?
2. Am I missing the point somehow? Does everyone somehow realize that the 530i is probably best bought with an automatic and that if I'm buying a 6-speed, I should buy a 550i? Having test-driven the 530i in automatic (w/sport package), I think it would be great with a 6-speed...

Any thoughts?

Welcome!! I think you'll probably have to place an order unless you can find a car from a dealer outside of California. I suspect that what the dealer is telling you is right. The lack of 530 6-speeds in the dealer inventory is simply down to the fact that most buyers tend to want auto so that's what they hold in local inventory. Friend of mine bought an E90 325i Sport in manual and the dealer said it was the only one they had ordered (for their own stock) in a while and it was just lucky that they had one in when my friend was in the market. I don't think it's in any way shape or form down the 6 speed not being suitable for the 530, just that dealers are stocking cars that would appeal to more buyers. I suspect most buyers of the 6 speed and SMG were in the same boat and placed an order for their car, and that's probably your best bet here too. Good luck and keep us posted,

The demographic that buys a 5 series want a nice car to drive, rarely will they (we?) bring it to the track.

Just go ahead and order it. The waiting sux, but you will get what you want in the end. The discount will be the same if you order it as you would having the dealer find it.

Yeah, just do it. That's how I bought mine - I had driven a non-Sport Steptronic in the test drive even though I ordered a Sport with a 6 speed. I have never regretted my purchase.

Looks like the sample in this form is severely skewed then...

Thanks for the input, everyone.

I'm off to see who best to order this from in the Bay Area. If you have had a good experience with anyone in particular, that would be helpful to know.

It's good to see a number of people with 6-speed 530i's. I guess virtually everyone bought them without having test-driven one first, which is a little unusual given the money spent!
