Thanks for the input, everyone.

I'm off to see who best to order this from in the Bay Area. If you have had a good experience with anyone in particular, that would be helpful to know.

It's good to see a number of people with 6-speed 530i's. I guess virtually everyone bought them without having test-driven one first, which is a little unusual given the money spent!
You're right about buying it sight-unseen (or -undriven)... I talked to alot of folks who have owned BMW's with manual transmissions (and I've been driving a stick for 30 years) so I felt comfortable based on the reputation - I have not been dissappointed!

Cheers, Jon.

This is the 2nd 5er I've had to order to get a manual tranny.

Ordered sight unseen.

BMW + Sports Package + Manual Transmission = as God intended

There are few or no E60s with 6sp or SMG at US dealers period.

(When I was looking for a SMG E60 to test drive, my dealer's system showed only 3 SMG cars at dealers on the entire East Coast.)

You're right. But I guess I haven't thought about it much before. I've owned so many manual BMWs and only an E34 (and E53) had a slushbox. Sport package and manual transmissions are required for me. I didn't even give the slush box a thought. But I have to say that I did consider an SMG this time around.

It should be easy to get a e60 at about $1500 over invoice (not MSRP, which is what each dealer will quote you). Use this forum to find MY07 invoice rates for the options you want. Dealer will quote you in MSRP and you simply need to say you want car at $1500 over invoice (not including taxes and tags). Start will dealers on other side of city and finish with closest to your house or best reputation. I played one dealer off another and closed at $1500 over invoice without issue. Although I did have to put down a deposit for a 550 with manual as dealer had not sold one before.

For manual you will likely have to order from dealership and they will order it built in Germany (i'd wait a month until after world cup frankly). This way you can get exactly what you want in terms of transmission, exterior and interior colors and options. Search this forum for the various options, we are all have opinions on what to get! Good luck.

Thanks to all who replied to this thread!

I actually found a dealer with a 525i with a 6-speed today and took a test drive. The salesperson actually let me drive the car home by myself so that I could have some time with the car. I liked it a lot, although it felt a little under-powered with the 215hp engine.

After returning the car, the salesperson really pushed me to buy a used 545i or 550i rather than a new 530i. I think it's a matter of the instant sale versus a deal that he closes down the line. I'll probably end up ordering from someone else.

When I got my 550 in April, it was the only non-black manual in the entire country.

Looks like the sample in this form is severely skewed then...

ABC
I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that a large percentage of 5 series owners are not enthusiasts; hence not a member of any online forums like ourselves. As for my former statement, I should have stated the North American demographic; 90% of which drive slushboxes (a random percentage that I always hear being thrown around).

I could never find a manual to test drive. But I had an E39 manual before and the feeling is rather similar. Its harder to move the lever thorugh the gate on the E60.
