Well, it was the steering wheel sensor.
But now the active steering feels less well defined at center.
Its almost like it has 5 degrees or so of freedom where you can turn the wheel and nothing happens.
Feels almost like a Lexus steering now, but only around the center point. The rest is perfectly fine...

This also happened to my 550i, and my dealer (Classic BMW in Richardson, Texas) took care of it promptly and without issue. I had a nice X5 3.0i loaner, with 750 miles on it. Brand new, basically. The car was in at 8am and out by 2pm. Very fast and now, it feels to me like before.
Regards, Michael.

My Ride: Current car:
2006 530ia
On Order for December ED:
2009 335i coupe
My January 06 build 530 just started showing this error message today. The steering feels much looser and it certainly doesn't have the typical quickness of AS at lower speeds. Oh well, at least the first six months were trouble free.

My Ride: 530i 6 speed
Yes, after I had it fixed. The center feeling is different. My wife confirmed it. Strange... Well, maybe I will have to go back to get the recall with the rear struts done anyway....
