So much confusion. MY 2008 in USA starts from March '07 production for 528i/xi, 535i/xi and 550i. At the beginning 535i/xi only come in automatic transmission. Manual transmission is available on 535i/xi started 9/07. Attached find the official Dealer Product bulletin which spells it out ( courtesy Jon of Bimmerfest)

Thank you everyone - RD@VA, bmw1986 - for the clarifications and information. While I am disappointed that I won't have my first 5-series for summer, at least I won't get totally hosed on a money factor that's frankly more than it should be for this model line.
So, in a nutshell, it'll work out.
I'm definitely getting the iPod option.
