Eyebrows not working...

This dealer is in Toronto "Parkview BMW" and what does SIB stand for?

So the dealer wants $387 to upgrade the software. He said it's 3 hours of work.
It will also fix other things like idle and pinging etc. so I may just go with it.

He's stretching the truth somewhat about the "3 hours of work". Yes it takes several hours for the update to be completed, but there's nobody working on it during that time. It's like when you back your computer up, you put in the work at the beginning then leave it alone, just checking in now and then to see if it's fallen over in a heap.

Agreed but apparently that's how all dealers charge for the upgrade.

Schlooky, is your car out of warranty? If it's under warranty, they can't charge you for it cause it's in their SIBs to fix known issues with that upgrade. If you're out of warranty, ask them if they can do a goodwill since the upgrade will fix these known issues.

Thanks guys, the car in out of warranty, I will ask them, if they don't budge, I will try another dealer.

It's a 2004 545i with 130,000km.

Again thanks for the advise.

I was just quoted $300 for the update. Has anyone had any issues after the update?
