I recently made the dumb desicion of upgrading my stock 225/50/17 to staggered 245/40/18 and 275/35/18. I even bought the size 18 staggered wheels but have been quite dissapointed. Those tires are so wide that on the roads of South-East Arkansas (read: Rural America) these tires constantly slip from one side of the road to another.

Not only that but I have to constantly hold the steering at 10 degrees to the left in order to keep the car from drifting to the right.

Where's all the fun gone? I may as well be driving my wife's Corolla

Can these tires be mounted on my old stock wheels

BTW I have an 06 non-sport 525i
I dont think its anything to do with your wheels. It sounds like you need the tracking done. Go get the alignment checked, its probably out.

I use 225/50R17 in winter and 245/40R18+275/35/R18 in summer. I can say that the difference is quite high in terms of tramlining. Huge difference on the same surface.

As for 10 degrees the steering wheel to the left... Hmmm. I think this is another problem. Check alignment and also check the steering wheel.

Or maybe you can try to explain again what the problem is...

If the road surface is poor its typically humped in the middle and riddled with grooves from traffic. Both of these would cause the experience of jumping over the road and having to turn the wheel to the center of the road to remain 'on track'.

If you go to a brand new road - that has proper grade, and still experience the issue you have a car geometry problem. If the problem isnt there on a good road surface, you can blame the issues on poor city engi neering!

I know excactly what you are talking about!

Tramlining it is, its even worse with RF tyres.

Are your new tyres RF?

Question of looks 18" vs. 16":

My tires are Bridgestone potenza pole position non-run flats. They had the highest rating on Tire rack.

As far as getting a new e60 as someone suggested, I would love that but I would have my rear kicked: I have 38000 miles after 16 months.

I agree with the majority here...have them checked/balanced/alignment.

I went from a non-staggered setup (16" non-sport) to a 20" setup (245F - 275R) and I've only experience some drifting/tramlining with uneven/worn roads.
