I dissabled the flap on my 330i, it gives the same throaty sound as a sports exhaust. Discnnect the vaccum pipe and plug the pipe with a golf tee. Then listen to the difference. Dont think it effected the performance but it sounded great.

I have seen that the cars with bigger motors have exhaust pipes with larger diameter. I have an 525d which I really want some bigger pipes.
Does anyone have done any modification like this? Any pics and DIY? I dont necessery need a complete exhaust set, but just the estetic.

Is quite normal for cars with bigger engine have bigger pipe because they simply produce more exhaust gas.

Ok so it enhances the noise from the exhaust not from the engine?

Why don't you get someone to sell you just tips and have them installed (easy for any competent muffler shop)--e.g., B&B. Here are some pics.

A golf tee is what you put a golf ball on before the initial drive down the fairway or were you joking? I personally use one to launch balls into the hedge.

I've followed my own car at slow speed and seen the flap moving so I assume its purely a noise retarder.

Right, but sometimes cars have bigger tips than their actual exhaust system diameters for aesthetics--but I can't say for sure RE what's above.

Yeah but if it would look better overall they would have put it on all e60 models don't you think?

Finaly i think it has to do smth with the volume of the exhaust gases. If they fit a big exhaust (pipes and finals) to a 520i let's say...yeah you would get a bonus in the look factor but i think you would also get a drawback in the performance. If the engine doesn't push out that much gas, the gas would stick around more to exit the exhaust resulting in a bigger and unwanted backpressure wich leads in less perofromance.

I don't know if i explained it the right way.
Anyway...i'll try to find out more about that flip cap.

Donv

This was really nice pipes (tips) - This is what I'm looking for. Are they original or have you changed the exhaust system? Can this be done with only changing or adding the tips?
