Don't bother. I convinced my SA last year that it had to be done, but was told it could be up to 2-3 days of having the car at the shop. That bothered me. When I learned of ALL the bugs and issues that "could arise" from the new install, I decided to let it be. It works perfect as it is, it's just not the pretty silver and is instead, the ugly brown. I can live with it. Don't fix something that's not broken. More frustrations may come about down the road, for something that worked perfectly this whole time.

Although I had every reason to get the upgrade (I had specific challenges that were fixed with the upgrade), they would not do it, but by chance I mentioned that ONE time the HVAC in my car would not shut off, that was all they needed and they did the upgrade.
Yes, I now have faster boot times, prettier screen, no more accept button, and some other niceties.... I now have slower bluetooth pairing and worst of all, my Active Steering is overboosted. Sort of wish I had not gotten the upgrade......

My 2006 550 is at the dealer now for this exact issue, did you have it and what was the fix? Thanks, Pete

Thanks all for the responses. I see both sides of the arguement here. What gets me is that updates to the OS are coming out frequently that address prior glitches. While it's true this leaves you open to the risk of a new, previously unknown issue -- I also think that the perfection of iDrive will come with these bugs being worked out as they are installed in our vehicles..
It's interesting to me that BMW does not offer these as standard operating practice. It says something about the process....obviosuly, they're not comfortable reprogramming or updating cars just because there's a new OS out. But, as a BMW owner, you want the most functionaility out of your car -- so I WANT the POI on my NAV menu, faster boot times, prettier colors and newer features.
Think about the fact that reprogs can take anywhere from a few hours to days if it fails and it says a lot about the fact that the system is not perfected or anywhere close. BUT.....me still wants to be the one that has the newer version! It's a risk I'm willing to take, esp. as newer versions ARE more functional and MORE stable as compared to prior iterations.
Just my thoughts.... I'm gonna go and try next week to get it upgraded as I know there's a new version out.....

Reporting back, picked up car this past tuesday, dealer had to replace CCC to fix blanking out screen. Keeping my fingers crossed. Was told that this sometimes happens when a pre LCI is updated with software later than 25. Does anyone have an idea why these systems are crashing with an apparent routine re-progam?
So I know there have been posts on this before, but I still can't seem to find the right method to determine what idrive software version I have. I have a 2005 530i with Navi. Could someone who has this vehicle and has been able to figure out the steps to get to hidden menus (software version), please list the steps to take. Also what is the most recent version of idrive, and is it compatible with all models? thanks
