I'm trading in my '07 550i for a '11 and am thinking about the option to pick it up in Munich in Feb. There seem to be some pros and cons and am wondering if any of you have tried it and have an opinion on whether it's worth it.

Pros - $4000 off the price, experiencing touring the Bavarian Alps and maybe a side trip to Tuscany, driving the autobahn (after break-in), factory tour, etc.

Cons - Don't get to drive it for two months while it's being shipped over but still paying for it, possibly having to rent snow tires while in Germany, a week or so of hotels, food and the airfare that will eat up the savings.

So what do you think - worth it?

You are definitely going to need snow tires if you are planning on driving in Feb - required by German law. I heard there is a business that will rent the wheels for your car for 30 days. Some areas in or near the Alps also require snow chains.

The Alps are beautiful this time of year, but unless you are a ski/snowboard fan I'd delay the pickup until at least mid-April when the weather is nicer and the festival season begins. If I remember correctly you can drive on summer tires beginning May 1.

Worth it? I'm thinking of moving to the States, just so I could experience European delivery just once in my lifetime! GO for it!

Well, that pops that bubble....snow tires at the 155 limiter speed just wouldn't be fun would it. May is definitely looking better. I got to do the autobahn once in a car that takes full advantage of it.

My wintertyres are w-rated and not uncommon in Germany; they'll do 165+ mph all day long, but you might not want to! I was on the autobahn earlier this week, north of Hamburg where the ice was like a mirror and going 30 was treacherous. North of Lubeck it was all fine again and top speed would not be a problem, so if you find the right circumstances, you can enjoy it; wintertyres should not be the limiting factor.
