A supercharger is just blowing air into the engine and to my knowledge it does not induce significant stress on the engine. The added stress is on the transmission and driveline as a result of the increased torque and power. ESS has yet to mentioned torque numbers and whether or not our stock transmissions can handle the increase.

1) Because I already own my car and I'm too busy to search out a good deal on an M5.
2) Maintenance on my 550i is less than it would be with an M5.
3) My brother-in-law could put the SC kit on for no charge. He's a BMW tech.
4) I think $1 - 3K's is a slight exaggeration. I wouldn't buy an M5 with 100,000 miles on it.
5) Why not?

Coming from an ESS supercharged 330i zhp, it's exhilarating to feel the power produced by the supercharger, when called upon. Another plus is the looks I would get from e46 M3s and similar cars, when I'm able to keep up with and pass them. Of course, this was mainly on the highway. Otherwise, the car will drive as it does stock. So, in my opinion, the supercharger wouldn't be too much of a burden on the engine, more so transmission and driveline as stated above. Besides, you'd probably put more stress on an engine by forcing it to keep up with other cars, in stock form, over time.
As for the link above to the 2006 M5 - Sure, you can find M5s within many price ranges. But, when comparing year and mileage, e.g. 2008 550i and a 2008 M5, each with say 30k miles, the difference is definitely more than $3K.
If ESS releases the supercharger for the 550i, and I'm in a position to buy it, I will. They make great products and offer great service. Plus, I'd like to revisit the looks I used to get when I had my 330i.
